This summer the church has high school Leadership Development interns! They started on July 6, and will be here for six weeks in total. During that time they will be busy learning about Boston history and material culture, gaining life and works skills, and exploring spirituality. The outreach program, which is being coordinated by BU Theology graduate student John Parker, also includes visits Boston area museums and job shadowing with Old North staff.
How were their first two weeks? Here’s Johnny and JR with the answer:
Hello my name is Johnny Delacruz and I am fifteen years old. I attend City On A Hill Charter H.S. I am standing next to John in the picture on the right.
I am going to be a junior this September, and I am going to be taking American history. I mention this class because this internship is really us learning more about the history of Boston before and after the American revolution and the origins around the Old North Church. This is good for me because I am going to have an advantage over my peers in school about the History of America.
There is also a lot more we do around the church — we job shadow the other staff, go on field trips, and of course talk about the topic of spirituality.
The first week we learned about the colonies and how they were established, also how they worked. Then at the end of the week we went to U.S.S Constitution and museum and learned the origins of the boat and what is what it was like and how it was used. For the start of the second week, we got to experience job shadowing, and I got to meet the sexton of the church. He is an awesome dude — Tim is his name, which is probably my favorite job shadowing so far. We also got to see how the gift shop works, and what Priscilla [Parish Administrator] does every day, and John helped me write my resume!
Today we went to the Museum of African American History. I am having a great time and I hope these remaining weeks are as good if not better than the last.
My name is JR Branch, I am 15 years old, and I am wearing the bright red shirt in the picture above. I go to Boston College High school. I have been apart of the internship at Old North for 2 weeks, and I have learned a lot.
During the program I have explored colonial history, how the colonies were established, and how they functioned. I have also explored the very important role that Old North Church has played throughout history. I visited the U.S.S Constitution to have a look at a real living piece of colonial history that still stands today.
I have also spoken with the other interns and our leader John Parker on the historical topic of slavery in America — particularly in Boston. We came to the conclusion that Boston was not a slave-society but a society with slaves. To show examples of what we discussed, we visited the Museum of African American History.
After speaking about all these things history and spirituality I realized how interesting and captivating it really is. I’m glad to know that the program is not over, but has only just begun and there are so many new things to learn.
