During the bicentennial of the United States, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II attended services at Old North Church with her husband, Prince Philip.

After the church service, the Queen and her husband went to the Old State House to address a crowd. While acknowledging that Patriot leaders like Samuel Adams and Paul Revere might have been surprised by the warm welcome she–a British monarch– had received, she hoped they would also be pleased that the United States and Great Britain had eventually forged a friendship based on mutual respect and values.

The Queen’s visit showed how the United States and Great Britain had evolved over the centuries.

When Queen Elizabeth II died in 2022, Old North hosted the official book of condolence for the city of Boston for mourners to sign. For three days, people lined up to express their sympathies to staff from the British Consulate and to inscribe the book. Many who came spoke of their respect for the queen’s devotion to duty and to her people.
